when equal IS NOT fair 091408 re-entry

you divide the electric bill by equal parts
so each of you (housemates) pays the same amount
regardless of the electric equipment used and the hours of usage.
bang! that's when 'equal' isn't fair!

you divide the day's allowance by equal parts
so each of you (siblings) gets the same amount
regardless of the fare and the physiological needs of each.
bang! that's when 'equal' isn't fair!

you give your students the same high grade (academic score)
so each of them gets to get good marks
regardless of their research output or efforts in class.
bang! that's when 'equal' isn't fair!

bang! bang! bang!

5 obvious sssh-sssh i won't blog about

1. (to practically everyone) ...
your favorite 'kwek kwek' vendor
uses the same washwater
(after the shell is removed from boiled quail egg)
from sun-up to sun-down. he/she also didn't wash his/her hand
after answering nature's call. harroojosko.
(so much for being so-oh-observant).

2. (to self-proclaimed teacher's pet) ...
your highly esteemed
professor just shared your story
to his/ her colleagues over lunch and my my, they were amused!
(now you know the reason for those glances).

3. (to parents of a yuppie/ student) ...
your baby is converting
his/her flat/ dorm room/ boarding house to a motel.
his/ her lucky gf / bf doesn't only get free meals
(sometimes free laundry service) but free 'bed-service' as well.

4. (to ever-caring bf / gf) ...
your adored gf/ bf used up all
her/ his savings in trying to help your
hopeless-loser-needing-a-kick-in-the-ass-friend.
(and you still wonder why the 'friend' isn't bugging you lately?).

5. (to you who spend scandalous time online) ...
your webclicks are monitored, saved and sold.
(but hey, what you don't know won't hurt you, right? hala!)

now you know why i won't blog about these obvious sssh-sssh. ciao!

flashback 2010: i eat 5x a day

breakfast... breaking the fast...some hard-cooked egg (some call it hard-boiled)...this was when i still use the common-kitchen (september blues)...mixed nuts for morning snack, courtesy of dean manding...yummy, especially 'coz it's free! then teh lunch!!! one big red apple. a reminder.

frozen yogurt for dinner? why not... it's packed with nutrients and good bacteria! i don't know if it's just me, but after a small cup of  frozen yogurt, i felt full...kept the craving at bay 'til about midnight---
midnight snack - roasted corn dipped in apple cider vinegar. munch munch munch...don't ask me if this is any good. i say--- try!!!

[of course this is not a daily food sked (this is just an episode of my temporary life)... i eat rice with veggies, rice with alamang, rice with fish, rice with some chicken (not in one sitting) every now and then...plus water water water]

oh well, i eat. i pray. i love. i live...and...i just felt like sharing! (winks)

ok ka lang mama??? [tb070110]

being a temporarily-miles-away mama, we have to content ourselves with calls and exchange of short messages (sms) using a mobile phone (cp)...in 2 years time, i noticed that as my wowa grew older, his smss have become way shorter as well...

lately,he has to bring the cp to school so he can contact his papa during break and dismissal time (to be fetched or to be assured that he would be fetched - he has become somewhat clingy these days).

here's a run-through of his cute - smss:

06/29/10 558pm   : thank you sa cellphone
06/29/10 830pm   : mama ok ka lang
06/29/10 852pm   : ok ka lang mama?
mama thank you talaga dito ha
06/29/10 903pm   : ma bakit hindi maka text
06/30/10 731am   : mama are you there
06/30/10 732am   : haha miss kita mama
06/30/10 815am   : mama ok ka lang
06/30/10 819am   : mama hug ko si lola
06/30/10 1159am : hello mama
06/30/10 1212pm : san ka banda mama
kay noynoy. panoorin ka namin. makita ka
07/01/10 542am  : ma nabigyan mo na ako load
07/01/10 955am  : ok ka lang jan mama
07/02/10 645am  : ok ka lang mama
07/02/10 738am  : mama ok ka lang jan

you noticed something too? hahaha.
ok nga lang ba ako? (am i really okay?)
as long as he will keep on wanting to know
if i am okay then i will be. :)

econ 101: externalities

externalities is an economic concept for "side-effect" or "spill-over". it occurs if a person’s activity affects the well-being of an uninvolved person. this term comes from the fact that someone external to the action or transaction is affected by the activity (or production of consumption of the good). this may be positive (externality) or negative (externality). A positive externality occurs if an activity creates benefits for uninvolved people. A negative externality occurs if an activity creates costs (harm or discomfort) for uninvolved people.

lately i have been thinking of this concept in a 'not-so-economist-way'. i have reason to believe that i have been experiencing negative externality. one person's activity have been affecting my well-being (as an uninvolved person in the activity) for about a month now.

have you ever been disturbed by 'noises' of a neighboring space while you are doing your 'writing jobs' ? (remedy: tell the 'whoever causes the noise' to tone it down or if to no avail, let them feel that you are disturbed in any manner you know how) ...have you ever inhaled second- hand smoke that lead you to bouts of irritating cough? (remedy: cough your lung out and drink lots of water or find out next time where/whom the smoke came from and politely ask him/her to just swallow it)...

have you ever been distracted knowing something illegal (or immoral) is going on nearby and you just can't (or so far, won't) do anything about it 'coz you might be branded as naive or self-righteous- so distracted that it costs you your peace during your established work-hours? (remedy: read your bible and ask for inner peace or sing your prayers out loud so your mind won't have space to think of other things or talk to the people involved as if they'd listen to you and feel ashamed that they'd stop doing it or find a new place and wonder what externalities will be in store in the new place)...i could go on and on about it but i guess somehow you get the picture. what are you to do? what am i to do? - still, das ist die Frage!

i want it clean (sometimes)

most of the time i wanted my hair to let them be. loose and curly, flowing and unkempt. it makes me different from all the other rebonded hair that i can see all around.

there was a time i had them straightened (oh well, for the heck of it). big mistake, they lost their natural moisture (why? beats me!).  they hated me for it. they brittled ...and it's as if one by one they committed suicide. i had to appease them (conditioners and all) but to no avail. i ended up having to cut the bunch a little shorter.

and now that they are  uber-long again, the bad-hair-days have become frequent especially that i'm on a writing-spree, i just can't take care of them. not now. not just yet. so again, most of the time i let them be. loose and curly, flowing and unkempt.

but sometimes, i want it clean and hidden. best solution is have it braided. the way angelina does it in tomb raider (lump tie them all semi-tightly first then braid then tie again at the end).  tada!

three rooms in three years (2010 memories)

since i decided to pursue my postgrad in 2008 in the north part of the country (the national capital region), i have lived in three different rooms... all i wanted was a space, good enough for me to be able to do my reading, my thinking, my laundry and ocassional cooking...and yes, some space for once-in-a-while-sleeping (read: i sleep once-in-a-while, but i stay there all-the-time).

first was chosen by an old flame who went all the way from his place in cavite to manila area to find me a room/bedspace conducive enough for my needs yet affordable enough for my budget (the scholarship fund isn't enough you bet). he found a beautiful 3-floor townhouse accepting lady bedspacers for 2000 php each (US$1=45 php). there may be four or six in a well-ventilated, semi-furnished room with one toilet and bath on each. it's a great deal save for-- you have to pay extra for each electronic or electrical gadget you might use and contribution for the gas if you'd be cooking/using the kitchen. lived there for more than a semester til i have to look for another place coz the residents have become too comfy for comfort.

in situations such as that, you have to practice maximum tolerance, especially you are dealing with about twelve people (most in their 20s-some generation gap huh) in just one roof. some may borrow your personal stuff without permission (or belatedly); some may wonder about you and presume things about you (your schedule and way of doing things such as your-wanting-all-your-books-near-you-in-your-bed) without even caring to ask you upfront (honestly, why should they even care as long as you are not using up their space/time); and some may bring in their friends (though friends of the opposite sex aren't allowed to enter bedrooms) playing cards, laughing , giggling and shouting til the wee hours of the morning. the place was beautiful but that (the noise and nighttime gaming events, including the possible SH-invits sssh sssh) went on until you feel like you have to find a new place.

second was a room in a three-bedroom flat near the university. it's an old old building with about 20 units for rent. all i needed was a bedspace (and that time, two other girls from the previous place decided to transfer with me). we have found a room for 4500 php. it's small and dusty. it's bare and the wall paint (one side on cement, one side on wood) is obviously more than a decade old. the provision for kitchen, toilet and bath is shared with residents of  two other rooms. maybe it's the no-curfew, no landlady-in-the-house situation that made us decide to get the room. maybe it's the fact that it's a ride away from the nearest mall, or a walk-away from the university, the hospital and the church or maybe, just maybe it is all we can afford--that would be 1500 php for each of us. cleaning up, putting life-sized landscape posters, we managed to make the room as homey (best-effort) as it can be. lived there for about a year with only some issues not that difficult to handle or disregard.

now that the roommates have left (one graduated from college, the other decided not to take the board exams after failing, hence deciding to work somewhere and somewhat unrelated to her course), i couldn't afford the rent for the entire room. so i transferred to a smaller (smallest!) room - the third, say about two meters long and one meter wide (?).  i have to haggle with the landlord to have me pay 2500 php instead of his initial offer of 3000 php, so he gave in (500 php is about two weeks supply of eggs and instant pancit canton!)-thank goodness.

was it liveable? oh well,  i have to make it that way. cleaning up (with soap, antibac and later floorwax), purchasing a small electric fan and recycling old CDs and magazines made it look less of a staircase-storeroom. being alone isn't that bad at all, in fact, it is way better. it's like having your own world...up to the time that you need to answer the call of nature. snap! back to earth. inday, put on your bathrobe 'coz the boyfriend or the father of another housemate or the nephews or the aide of the landlord may be just on the common area, you don't wanna be seen in your usual-almost-see-through-pjs, dontcha?! haaayyy

...the wall drawings that you are seeing are my almost-hopeless efforts to make the second room/bath a little homey. armed with just a pint of pink paint (one housemate had her on-job-training at boysen paint, how she got it is another story :) ), i did the deed one very hot dawn...

my non-electric thoughts

long ago...if you wanted light---
here are the steps:

1. get a match, get kerosene lamp, lift the globe off.
2. strike the match, light the wick, put the globe back on.
3. adjust the flame for the best light. (there’s a little knob on the side of the lamp that you could use to raise or lower the wick to adjust the amount of light)

after days of use, the wick would get crusted and would not light (burn) enough, so---

a. do procedure #1
b. roll the wick up higher .
c. get scissors and trim the crusted part off
d. do procedure #2 (#3 if needed)

there you have your light again…

yeah sure, that easy right? but now it’s so –oh– different…people talk about how inconvenient it is when electricity is out for even a few hours. almost everyone complain, others worry… others chose to fall asleep and hope for the ‘lights’ to be back upon waking up. for that period of time that the light switch does not produce instant light -you simply can’t do anything productive… the pc won’t turn on to tell you if you have messages from your online buddies and your mind have suddenly ‘blacked-out’ too that you can’t think-write… for some, it’s the inconvenience of not having water for home-use ‘coz it runs with an electric pump.

hay…our lives in the recent past and present have become so dependent on electricity it became really hard to imagine the world without it. our lifestyles have changed dramatically. years ago, in pansol balara (luzon, philippines), I draw water from the well by hand. now, it would seem to be an impractical task. those were the days that I did laundry by hand (teka, i still prefer to do that even with the advent of those ever-turning wash machs)…days that I polished floor with a scrub made of coconut husks, hence I didn’t need those electric house -cleaners and electric exercise-machines altogether.

what did we do then for entertainment? there were a few movie theaters (expensive too), very few televisions (most in black & white), no CD players, and computers can only be seen in big offices. now it seems to me that the reason why we learned to sing, dance, act or play musical instruments is because there were not any of those electric gadgets at home…and we were happy too (happier even). possibly the invention of electricity has caused the newer generations to be less creative (in using their natural gifts).

the question is: are we willing to go back to those days ? am I? this question needs a lot of thinking, and surely with the ‘electrifying noise’ and busy-ness around me, I won’t be able to do that ‘thinking’-thing. so let’s leave it at that for the mean time.

define ALMOST NOTHING

after three weeks of almost nothing
i have to wake myself up
why, was i asleep?

after three weeks of almost nothing
i have to cheer myself up
why, was i down?

after three weeks of almost nothing
i have to motivate myself again
why, was i discouraged?

after three weeks of almost nothing
i have to face the days heads high
why, was i feelin' incompetent?

after three weeks of almost nothing
i have to make myself believe
why, was i feelin' hopeless?

perhaps.
perhaps.
perhaps.
perhaps.
perhaps.

come to think of it...
those three weeks of almost nothing
were few of the best weeks i had.

back @ la nana - alone again

so im back at la nana...alone again, naturally...i always go there when i needed a taste of home cooking...i go there too for the fun of overhearing familiar conversations...now i have another reason to go there--- the TV hahaha. when i wanted to have series of moments with the idiot box (which is sadly very seldom), i go there. save from the TV and the new goto cart near the entrance, the resto hasnt change much. still the homey-freewifi-spot no-nonsense resto along espana, few walks away from my cell.
that evening, i had a variety of viands to choose from--- pork adobo, beef and mushrooms, caldereta, and some i-dont-know-how-they-are-called dishes. but since, im not a fan of pork and beef- i got me plain rice and chicken soup and  fried fish dipped in soysauce-vinegar mix...had my free glass of iced tea too. i was alone...but...i didnt feel that way...coz...somehow...i felt at home.

braving the rain for the bestest-ever pancit and fresh lumpia

i can't even remember when was it. but i have clear memory of the heavy rain pouring that sunday afternoon. after my usual sacred time (at my cell), sorting things both physically and spiritually, friend irene called- asking if i still am up to our plan of having authentic chinese 'merienda' at binondo (manila), the rain then is showing no signs of stopping. without further thinking, i said 'yes of course, give me 10 to 20 minutes and i'd be at the meeting place'. she was quite worried 'coz the place was somewhat unfamiliar to me, hence she decided to meet me at the church where i have less probability of getting lost, it's an old famous church in manila (name that church) anyways.

paying 50 php (a little more than a dollar), i asked the driver of a tricycle to bring me to that church. he didn't hesitate to bring me there passing by flooded streets (only on rainy days do they get to ask for higher fares. on normal weather, a ride from dapitan-where my cell is-would just cost 10 to 15 php). and so i arrived. irene was waiting and somewhat amused by my go-go attitude. we walked the streets of binondo and found her favorite restaurant (name that restaurant) after several blocks. we have umbrella (each) but well, streets are semi-flooded so we're practically wet. we were greeted by the restaurant staff and were served with bestest-ever pancit and fresh lumpia in town. beat that!

breaking the fast

breakfast is called breakfast because it's a meal that breaks our night fast. hence, saying that it's the most important meal of the day is so correct. mine today is breakfast A: okra, egg and rice. okra, aside from being low in calories, has plenty of vitamin A, Thiamin, B6, C, folic acid, riboflavin, calcium, zinc and dietary fiber. eggs are a good source of low-cost high-quality protein. rice (which is staple here) provides fast and instant energy and pretty good bowel movement, stabilizes blood sugar levels and provides essential source of vitamin B1. rice (eaten in moderation, say half a cup?) is good for the skin too and helps build resistance to high blood pressure, dysentery and heart diseases. most of all, i cooked all of it in one sitting - fast, cheap, healthy! breakfast anyone?
