***The School of Satchel Launches ‘S.O.S PLEDGES’ Program in cooperation with KaEskwela Inc.

The School of Satchel (S.O.S), a Filipino leather goods brand, launches ‘S.O.S PLEDGES’ in partnership with KaEskwela Inc. which promises to give a school bag to a KaEskwela beneficiary for every purchase from S.O.S’ new premium collection available this month.

S.O.S is known for its hand-crafted vintage style leather satchels from genuine cow hide.  The brand’s products are made by Philippine craftsmen, are hand-cut and assembled manually.  S.O.S endeavors to support Philippine leather industries by using Pinoy leather and local manufacturing.

While living in the United Kingdom , Bianca Donato, the sole proprietor of S.O.S, saw firsthand how fortunate their public school students are since tuition fees, school supplies, meals and transportation are subsidized by the government. Bianca’s describes her motivation behind the program, “In the UK, students could focus more on their schoolwork and not worry about making ends meet.  Here education remains a privilege to a certain few which shouldn’t be the case.   We still have a long way to go and we can do our part by supporting organizations such as KaEskwela that aims to provide equal educational opportunities to all.”

The School of Satchel can be purchased online via http://thschoolofsatchel.multiply.com/.  Also available at Heima Stores (N. Garcia, Makati and Cubao Expo), Analog Soul in TriNoma and Vanity Without Apology in Pop Culture, Alabang Town Center

Cotabato Flood- Concerted Efforts Needed

Cotabato City's history dates back to the 15th century when an Arab missionary- Shariff Kabunsuan, landed along the banks of the Rio Grande de Mindanao and introduced Islam faith to the natives. It was the faith that moved the early settlers to communal life, and to establish the Sultanate of Maguindanao and later developed as the capital town of Maguindanao. In the nineteenth century, roads and wharfs were constructed and it paved way to the birth of modern day Cotabato. Come 1959, the then Municipality of Cotabato became a chartered city .Today, Cotabato City is the seat of two administrative regions: Region XII and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The city's gem- Rio Grande de Mindanao is the second largest river in the Philippines (182 kilometers long and 96 meters wide) and the longest in Mindanao. The great river was recently filled with aquatic weeds (water hyacinths and the like) coming from nearby marshland which was believed by many residents to may have caused blockage/clogging of the river spilling over the city's areas thereby causing floods due to weeks of heavy rains brought about by typhoons Egay and Falcon.

Over 100,000 people (more than 36,000 families) of the city’s 37 barangays were affected by the disaster. Many of the evacuees are staying with relatives, neighbors and friends but more or less15,000 have to be sheltered on basketball courts and other government facilities converted into evacuation centers. The local government have already identified 16 evacuation centers but officials are worried they may need more should the number of evacuees increase or the flooding worsen. Health and education concerns such as outbreak of diseases and continued suspension of classes (as school campuses were converted to evacuation centers) are also noted.

During the crisis, the national government was criticized for the shortfalls in assistance.Too much attention was given to the supposed role of the national government and too little to the actual efforts of those who made the biggest difference in the first days of a crisis- the people in the communities themselves. The local government and the residents demonstrated effective immediate response. Thousands of people were sheltered and fed by local efforts. The local government officials, with other organizations (NGO, media, schools and local business establishments among others) responded quickly and effectively by providing facilities and resources.

As the aftermath is being dealt with, 'word wars' between the national government (president PNoy and Ms. Soliman of DSWD) and the local government (city mayor Hon. Guiani Jr.) regarding relief assistance ensued. News updates regarding the flood was also flooded with almost-sensationalized statements stirring emotions from both camps and spectators alike. Where did the millions of pesos worth of relief assistance go? Why do local leaders declare (even signed formal manifesto) that they have not received any assistance? Who is to blame? Whom do they ask for further help and support as the effect of the crisis is still being felt?

The issues (food and clean drinking water primarily) and the system of bringing of relief aid (concerns cropping up as some units and offices fail to coordinate with local agencies) to evacuation areas has become a problem. While efforts of LGUs, government agencies and NGOs are commendable and planning for long term solutions that are needed to be able to prevent these scenario from happening again is being done, the affected families and those who chose to stay in their homes continue to wait for best immediate course of action. The success of every undertaking depends on the concerted efforts of the national and local government units, setting aside (or doing away) with political issues for the mean time or for good.

Perhaps it's about time to focus on preparing and developing response plans for local disasters on local level. Although in the event of a catastrophic disaster, a successful response is a national response. However, it does not mean a response that depend only on the national level, but rather at the local level as well in terms of preparation. Given the issues that have cropped up recently, IMHO, "The people closest to the problem are the ones best equipped to find the best solution." This is if and only if they are tapped properly to help in helping themselves.

Mangrove Party - Wowa's Best Birthday!

Mangrove forests are coastal plant communities that are part of a larger coastal ecosystem. In the Philippines, moreso in Mindanao, mangroves are important part of the ecosystem. They are very important habitat for many species of fish and wildlife, primarily serving as nursery habitat. They also serve as coastal protection from  typhoons. Further, mangrove forests help remove pollutants. In spite of these known  ecological functions, mangroves have been dredged and filled for decades to provide other coastal uses, such as housing and ports among others. There's no better time than NOW to save and help create/widen these very important part of our ecosystem.

Realizing the importance of the mangroves and in celebration of the Environment Month, the SoCCSKSarGen Bloggers, with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of General Santos City, several NGOs,  students from several schools, and other concerned individuals, planted over 2,000 mangrove tree seedling and hardwood at Minanga, Buayan, General Santos City. The area is an estuary in the protected seascape of Sarangani Bay.

Being held the same date (25th) as my son Wowa's 9th birth anniversary, we decided to make the day memorable by forgoing a kid's party (he declared weeks ago that he found it impractical- two thumbs up!) and joining the event. He was so excited, he woke us up at half past 3am and urged us to get ready to 'celebrate mangrove's birthday'.
This tag was confirmed during the actrivity when a CENR Officer explained to him that the seedlings he's planting will be home for baby fishes soon and that he just helped giving birth to it. He braved the above knee-deep mud and he did it better than I. As he planted the seedlings, he kept on saying how happy he is and that he is so thankful that we thought of doing such.
He was doubly surprised seing a local TV news taking a footage of him and asking him the reason for joining. He proudly said he doesn't mind getting dirty and that if there'd be chances, he gladly do so even if it isn't his birthday. May we (our kids and countrymen) continue to save Mother Earth in ways like this and many others.

my TOP 10 favorite quotes from TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER (a story within the watchmen story, all quoted from the sea captain)

1. How had I reached this appalling position with love,
only love, as my guide?

2.  My raft had grown increasingly grotesque, reflecting my own transformation.
Adrift, my darkest imaginings welled up unchecked,
spilling from brain to heart like ink.
Impossible to remove.

3.  There came an understanding so large,
it left no room for sanity.
So I ran.
The knowledge of my damnation chased me,
shouting, celebrating it's awful victory.

4. One of my crew lay ahead. Birds were eating his thoughts and memories.

5. Whoever we are, wherever we reside, we exist on the whim of murderers.

6. God has damned me.
God has damned us all.
Truly, life is hell,
and
death's rough hand her only deliverance.

7. Know this my friends: Hades is wet. Hades is lonely.
And in that instant, we knew each other.

8. I headed east. East, borne on the bodies of murdered men.
Hope can be a horrible thing.

9.I was a horror; amongst horrors must I dwell...

10. Noble intentions had led me to atrocity.
The righteous anger fueling my ingenious awful scheme
was but delusion.
Where was my error?

why beautiful messages sometimes don't sink

yes...isn't this picture amazing? beautiful? ...imagine the water in his hands slowly pouring, like magic eh? that's how it first looked to me when i saw it in an email (sent by my favorite aunt)...the booo-side is, it's followed by this:

QUICK PRAYER
Please do not break.  Just 27  words -
"God, our Father, walk through my house and take away all my worries and illnesses and please watch over and heal my  family in Jesus name, Amen."

now what happens when you get a beautiful prayer (in an email) but they make it look like a chain message and to make things somewhat a turn-off is adding this up:

This prayer is so powerful.  Pass this to 12 people including me.  A blessing is coming to you in form of a new job, a house, marriage, finances, or maybe an answer to something  (a prayer, a request) that you have been waiting for.  Do not break or ask questions.  Does God come first in your life? If so, stop what you are doing & send it to 12 people now.  Watch what He does!

i'm sure you'd agree with me that a prayer like that is powerful in itself and it would certainly work with the sincerest of heart and intentions... not because you have chosen to pass it to a specific number of people and semi-force them to do so (read last 3 lines in the quote above). i mean, no offense meant to those who send me messages such as this; curious and ever-wanting-to-learn as i am, i open almost everything and share if it's worth sharing. oftentimes, i opt to remove the 'chain-directions' that follows it 'coz i know it will sink better that way. am i right or not wrong? LOL. a blessed easter to you all!

lessons from japan

1. THE CALM -
Not a single visual of chest-beating or wild grief.
Sorrow itself has been elevated.

2. THE DIGNITY -
Disciplined queues for water and groceries.
Not a rough word or a crude gesture.

3. THE ABILITY -
The incredible architects, for instance.
Buildings swayed but didn't fall.

4. THE GRACE -
People bought only what they needed for the present,
so everybody could get something.

5. THE ORDER -
No looting in shops.
No honking and no overtaking on the roads.
Just understanding.

6. THE SACRIFICE -
Fifty workers stayed back to pump sea water in the N-reactors.
How will they ever be repaid?

7. THE TENDERNESS -
Restaurants cut prices.
An unguarded ATM is left alone.
The strong cared for the weak.

8. THE TRAINING -
The old and the children,
everyone knew exactly what to do.
And they did just that.

9. THE MEDIA -
They showed magnificent restraint in the bulletins.
No silly reporters. Only calm reportage.

10. THE CONSCIENCE -
When the power went off in a store,
people put things back on the shelves and left quietly.
Now that is a good example of an evolved nation.

just thought this is really worth sharing***
